Hair and Makeup Highlights from the New Mexico Wedding Expo

Lights. Cameras. Fashion. This past Sunday the ballroom at the Embassy Suites in Albuquerque filled with brides-to-be, their families, and just about every vendor a wedding could call for. Our student artists were right in the middle of it, spending the morning setting hair and doing makeup for the models of the New Mexico Wedding Expo fashion show. It was the kind of morning the beauty industry is built on: real people, real deadlines, and a runway waiting at the end of it.

Eighteen Models, Two Shows, One Busy Morning

Getting 18 models show-ready before the doors open is a production of its own. Every look had to be planned, executed, and locked down fast, then hold its shape through stage lights, quick changes, and not one but two runway shows. That means updos pinned to survive a full day, makeup layered to read from the back row without losing the model underneath, and a team of student artists moving station to station with a stylist’s eye and a stage manager’s clock. There is no redo button once the music starts.

We reached for the color palettes of AVEDA makeup to balance each model’s natural beauty with pops of vibrant color appropriate for the runway. Working with plant-powered product under time pressure teaches something a classroom alone cannot: how to make confident creative decisions and then watch them realized on stage, in front of a packed house.

The Looks That Walked the Runway

The show itself covered the full range of wedding-party beauty. There were classic bridal updos finished with delicate headbands and soft glam, fresh flower crowns of baby’s breath, and glittering quinceañera ball gowns paired with half-up curls. One of the boldest looks was a sculpted retro pompadour in copper and crimson, proof that runway hair can be as much art as technique. Looks for the mothers of the bride featured statement earrings and unexpected color accents, a reminder that great makeup flatters every age and every style. Each model walked with a look our students designed, built, and stood behind.

A Booth Full of Conversations

Out on the expo floor, AVEDA Institute produced a beautiful booth and had fun giving consultations while visitors spun the prize wheel to win a free gift. The ballroom was packed all day as couples and their families browsed everything they might need for the big day. From DJ services to cakes and photographers, travel agents to place settings, every corner of the wedding world was represented. And of course, hair and makeup by AVEDA.

Training That Carries Into the Salon
