How to Get Started at Aveda Institute New Mexico

Get Started at AVEDA Institute New Mexico

Most people who reach out to us already know they want a career in beauty. What they need is a clear map of how to get from interest to enrollment without guessing. This guide walks through every question we hear most often, in the order most prospective students ask them.

  • Enrolling requires a high school diploma or GED, and nothing else academically
  • Federal financial aid covers most or all tuition for the majority of New Mexico students
  • A 30-minute campus visit is the single fastest step from inquiry to a confirmed start date

Programs and Schedule

We offer two licensure programs. Cosmetology runs 1,600 hours and prepares students for the full state board exam, covering hair, color, cutting, chemical services, and the foundational skin and nail work required by New Mexico law. Esthiology runs 600 hours and focuses on advanced skincare, facials, waxing, and the product knowledge that working estheticians use every day.

Cosmetology runs on three schedule tracks so the program fits real lives, not the other way around. The three-day track meets Monday through Wednesday. The four-day track adds Thursday. The weekend track meets Thursday through Saturday. Most students complete cosmetology in 11 to 14 months depending on schedule, and esthiology completes in about 20 weeks. New cohorts begin throughout the year, with the next cosmetology starts on July 13 and July 16.

Who Qualifies to Enroll

Academic requirements are simple. You need a high school diploma or a GED. That is the only educational gate set by New Mexico licensing law. We do not require prior beauty experience, and we do not require letters of recommendation or standardized test scores. If you finished school, you can apply.

Students must be at least 17 years old, and applicants under 18 need a parent or guardian to sign during enrollment. Beyond that, what matters is your commitment to showing up. The program is hands-on from week one, and consistent attendance is the strongest predictor of how quickly you finish and how confident you feel when you sit for your state board exam.

What It Actually Costs

Tuition includes your professional kit, which means the tools, products, and case you will use throughout the program and take with you into your career. The kit is not an extra fee added later. We publish tuition figures during your campus visit because the right number depends on which program and which schedule you choose, and we want the conversation to be specific to you rather than generic.

Federal financial aid does most of the work for most students. AINM participates in the Federal Pell Grant program, and our FAFSA School Code is 041745. Pell Grants do not require repayment. For students who qualify, Pell often covers a substantial share of tuition, and in many cases the full amount. We help every applicant complete the FAFSA during the admissions process, so you do not have to navigate it alone. Payment plans are available for any remaining balance after aid is applied.

The cost conversation is part of every campus visit. We will not quote a sticker price over the phone before we understand what aid you qualify for, because the gap between published tuition and what students actually pay is almost always significant.

Booking Your First Visit

The campus visit is 30 minutes, and it is the most useful step you can take. You will see the Phase 1 floor where new students learn, the student salon where advanced students serve real clients, the dispensary, and the classrooms. You will meet a member of our admissions team, ask whatever questions you have, and leave with a clear understanding of your schedule options, your aid picture, and the next available start date.

There is no pressure to enroll during the visit, and we do not ask for any payment that day. Tours are available Tuesday through Saturday by appointment, and you are welcome to bring a parent, partner, or friend.

To schedule, visit avedanm.com/admissions or call the number below. If you are aiming for the July 13 or July 16 cosmetology cohorts, we recommend booking your visit at least two weeks before the enrollment deadline so there is time to complete your FAFSA and finalize paperwork.

Starting a new career feels like a large decision until you take the first concrete step. For most of our students, that step is the 30-minute tour. Schedule yours, see the building, and find out what enrollment actually looks like before you commit to anything.
